Durham City
I mentioned earlier about the city centre event in Durham. A northern based showman has operated at the Christmas festival for a number of years. This year the council decided to push the boat out and make the event a bit more spectacular. The events management company they employed for this task is one that we have an existing relationship with. Run by two sisters the company has employed us for corporate events in the past, and also for various festivals.

Not wanting to cause conflict with an existing operator, we agreed to provide attractions in Millennium Place (a stunning new part of the city centre housing a number of restaurants and bars) and the Gates shopping centre. In Millennium Place we provided a big wheel, helter skelter and a selection of side stalls and catering barrows, whilst in the gates we provided popcorn and candy floss. With the street furniture dotted around the main venue I was expecting a little bit of messing to get everything set, but in the event we pulled straight onto position and set up without much ado. Putting the catering barrows together the next morning provided some light relief when Arthur managed to pop the lenses out of his glasses, and an entertaining five minutes ensued with Arthur screaming at everyone to stand still whilst he tried to find the lenses, a process not helped by the fact that he couldn't see without them, and I was doubled over in hysterics laughing.

The Saturday of the event was excellent, with a steady stream of business all day, unfortunately Sunday saw a change in the weather with it raining incessantly right up until it was time to dismantle everything. At least we didn't get wet taking everything down. The clients seemed happy with the presentation (I have been invited to the companies birthday celebrations next week), and I think this is one event that we will be able to build on in the future.
