We ordered a fair bit of equipment from a USA based supplier recently. Now the items when they were dispatched were allocated a tracking number to enable us to track their whereabouts. Whilst keeping an eye on their progress, something unusual came to light. The goods were dispatched from a company based on the West coast of America, they were then shipped across America to arrive on the East coast, a distance of some 2800 miles. They were then transported from there to Stansted airport, roughly 3000 miles giving a total distance of some 5800 miles give or take, a process which took the grand total of 2 days.
This is where it becomes puzzling, since arriving at Stansted they have travelled to Tamworth, a distance of 120 miles, and how long has this taken, 2 days! In the exact same time period that the Yanks can transport my parcels 5800 miles, the British have managed to move them 120. Getting the calculator out I have managed to determine that parcels being transported in the American system travel at an average speed of 120 miles per hour. They then hit Britain and decelerate to 2.5 miles per hour, which means the Americans can move them 48 times faster than we can. Perhaps we should let the Americans come over here and run our parcel network.
