For a number of years I have used various examples of Microsoft windows phones, usually made by HTC to run my business whilst out of the office. Around 12 months ago I was seduced by the hype surrounding the Apple Iphone and switched to that. Almost immediately I was struck by many of the missing features I had taken for granted from my old phones. It wouldn't accept business cards from other phones, you couldn't set up individual call diverts, you had to pay to use it as a modem on a laptop and so on.
I persevered with it, but the longer I owned it the more apparent its shortcomings became, Internet access was so slow as to make it unusable most of the time, the battery rarely lasted much past teatime, the onscreen keyboard was very poor, and most frustrating of all, the email system only worked about 50 percent of the time.
Anyway with us having a busy season and me spending most of my time on the road, these shortcomings began to cause major problems for me. I rang Orange to see what could be done, only to discover that their customer service is very much like the Carlsberg adverts, its most probably the worst customer service in the world. I was continually passed around departments, I was told blatant lies on numerous occasions when I would be promised a call back and never receive one (5 times in one particular week).
A week ago I received a leaflet in the post from Orange. When I pulled it from the envelope I thought for a moment that Orange was finally admitting just how bad the phone actually was, the cover of the leaflet is pictured below;
What it actually says is, "Nothing loses business like losing your Iphone", but my thumb had obscured the additional word. Anyway after a great deal of pain, Orange have now agreed to take back my Iphone, cancel my contract and allow me to choose a new phone. Although the Jiffy bag that was being sent out to me last Thursday still hasn't arrived, so it could well be another lie from Orange customer services.
At the minute I am torn between either a blackberry of some sort, or one of the new Windows 7 phones. Technically the Windows phone seems superior, but what I really need is reliable email services, and this is the Blackberry's strongest point, so I may well go down that road.
